New efficient Solar cells

The energy generated from the sun is called solar and science is continuously developing a use for this natural energy source. New efficient solar cells are being put to work in a variety of ways. One of the concerns with solar power is the cost is still high and the conversion tends to be less efficient than desired. 

Organic Molecules

Scientists are finding by adding a single layer of organic molecules over the top of the solar cells they are able to increase the efficiency 3x and may be able to bring down the cost of solar cells. 

Quantum Dot Solar Cells

This is a new version of solar cells scientists are working with that are significantly less expensive to produce than traditional solar cells. However they do not produce the same level of efficiency. Most traditional solar cells are made of silicone which offers great results, but ultimately limits the cells efficiency to about 30%. Quantum dot solar cells do not have this limitation. 

Titanium Dioxide

Though scientists use a nanometer thick organic layer of titanium dioxide when working to increase the efficiency of the quantum dot solar cells, they found that the titanium oxide is not exclusive. The layer can be any molecule as long as it is organic and a nanometer thick. This tripled the solar cells effectiveness. 

Future Plans

As scientists are working more with quantum dot solar cells they're finding the length and other aspects of the organic layer used do matter to get the required results. Once an effective way is discovered to increase the energy efficiency of these solar cells, scientists hope to see the cost of producing them come down which will make them more affordable to everyone encouraging more use of solar power to replace fossil fuels.
